snake bird in Tupi language, and comes from the way it swims, with just it's serpentine neck and head sticking out of the water. It has bad buoyancy, dense bones and heavy waterlogged plumage without ability to waterproof feathers like other birds. It loves to perch to dry out just like the double-crested cormorant. Female is lighter one.
