Sandhill cranes and their little one

They were on Derexa pond this morning and what a magnificent site they are. Way across the pond they saw me and started herding toward me like cows or horses, not in a gallop but a determined walk. They actually remind me of deer though and I am not sure why. They came right up to my camera. I think they thought I had food. It is a little concerning that they are this unintimidated by humans. I know they hang out near the bird feeders and probably get what is dropped, but, I have never seen anyone feed them so why they came within a foot of me is a mystery. They were very calm and moved on soon after they greeted me.  I have reminded neighbors in my subdivision through nextdoor.com that it is illegal to feed them because they become agressive and there have been cases of children injured from it.
