The Glossy Ibis seems to prefer the Darchance pond but has been seen at Derexa too. There was a pair last week hanging out with a diverse group of long leggeds including the Wood Stork, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Great Blue Heron, and the Tricolor Heron. It is really unusual to catch them all together like this, and quite a amateur photographers dream if you can get close enough to shoot the group without risking your life. I could not unfortunately, but, mostly because I am a big chicken, and there is no way I am hiking to far corners of anywhere when the only place to run is water and woods.
Like the Wood Stork they use their bill to feel for food.Their breeding plumage is gorgeous, iridescent green and chestnut brown. The White-faced Ibis looks very similar, except, they have red legs and eyes, and the face is lighter and whiter. The Glossy has light legs and black eyes. Then there is the White Ibis too, different than the White-faced Ibis. They are all white with red/black bill and red legs. I have pics of those from the beach, Lido Key in Sarasota here,
