Little munchkins

Little munchkins were let out of the nest recently and if they were in our yard the entire time ...they were very quiet. Mama dropped them off here because it's about as safe as you can get. There are 4 of them. One litter last year was 6. I don't publicize these numbers to neighbors because some of them go nuts. Just like we keep alligator sightings to ourselves. Before you know it trappers are here if you do that.

The vinyl fence in our yard is a great big playpen for them. They have a half dozen different feeders to get into, and they have a bunch of different trees to climb for coordination building. Since we mainly only have seeds right now around us because our oak trees are too young yet, I stopped on my way home this morning and picked acorns off the ground for a little treat. I hope they like them. If they do, I'll keep collecting them.

Mama Squirrel

Even Mama squirrel is in on the Loquat fruit. Everyone loves the loquat fruit! She got mad at me taking pics of her and made a mean noise then stormed off with her fruit to a farther away branch.

squirrel moving babies

This was amazing to catch. At first I did not know what was going on and it appeared the mother was disciplining her babies in a very abusive way. The babies had gotten too big for the nest and she separated them and moved to two different ones. 2 went to the front of the house in a queen palm and two went to a different queen palm in the back. She carried them in her mouth and the baby wrapped his arms around her neck. The baby head is between Mama's arms on her chest facing up. The babies went reluctantly. It took her awhile to catch and get them to allow her to grasp them properly and securely. She had to work at it, and why I thought they were being scolded. She never touched ground doing this transfer. She jumped from palm frond to tree branch at times leaping through the air. I have never been so interested. The babies were almost as big as her. She is very strong and athletic to do this.

The brat squirrel

Nutty the squirrel was making a big stink this morning. The noise they make sounds like a frog on steroids. His tail was going a mile a minute too. I think he was mad because I got up earlier than normal and caught him in my backyard sneaking to the bird feeder. Anyways, he didn't want his picture taken either, and decided to cover his face, or maybe he thinks he is hiding doing that, or maybe he is playing peek-a-boo? Who knows but I am not sure having a squirrel around is going to work out. We'll see!

Gray Squirrel settling into new home

Meet Nutty the squirrel. Nutty moved in a few weeks ago. He is the first one I have seen in our new neighborhood. Our home was built in 2007, so, it took about 4 years for them to move on in. The trees especially the oaks are large enough now for them to be comfortable here with shelter and food. I haven't seen him at the bird feeder yet but he appears to be working his way up. Still very timid of me watching my every move sitting at the edge of our property in a queen palm tree. He eventually climbed down a frond and jumped to a magnolia tree to take him to the ground, and get away from the weirdo with the camera.
